stainless steel rusting dilemma Sorry, I’m about to write a review on a product I do NOT own (but was thinking of buying). I did remember seeing these in a store a couple years back, and they did feel really good in the hand, though. But the main point of my posting is to help people understand all the issues about stainless steel rusting or not rusting. This is a great FAQ from Specialty Steel Industry of North America. ([...]): ————— 1. What makes stainless steel stainless? Answer: Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 % chromium. It is this element that reacts with the oxygen in the air to form a complex chrome-oxide surface layer that is invisible but strong enough to prevent further oxygen from “staining” (rusting) the surface. Higher levels of chromium and the addition of other alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum enhance this surface layer and improve the corrosion resistance of the stainless material. Very low quality–Typical Chinese Junk It’s sad. There was a time when Oneida meant quality. Those days are gone–now Oneida is just a nameplate, and its products are manufactured in generic, no name factories in China just like the X brand junk you can get at any budget store. This set is low quality. The pieces are made from very heavy steel. Why? Because the steel they use is 18/0 stainless, the lowest quality stainless you can get. They have to make the pieces thick or they’ll bend. Compare that to my 10 year old Oneida set, made from 18/8 stainless. They’re thin and light as a feather because it’s high quality steel. Also, they include an insert in the packaging to tell you not to use these with acidic foods and that they must be washed right away to prevent damage. Why? Because low quality 18/0 stainless will be etched by food, but higher quality stainless (18/8) will not. In other words, don’t fall for the hype. If it’s cheap junk you want, buy a cheap junk brand and pay a cheap…...

Beautiful Stainless My daughter and son in law chose this silverware for their “good” silver. The cross-hatch pattern at the base matches wonderfully with the china by the same name. Sterling seems to be “out”; at least our Macy’s said they don’t carry sterling anymore. This is a nice and much less expensive alternative, heavy in weight and makes a beautiful table setting. Not the full picture I am sorry to say the photo did not represent the product in its entirety. This flatware looks as presented in the current photo however if you turn it sideways you would see there is no back to it — if you turn in over completely you will see that it is concave. It is very lightweight and small in size – it is very small for an adult male. It is a facade of nice looking silverware. I suggest that a side/back view of flatware should be a standard. Decent Starter Set This is a decent and somewhat lightweight set. I would consider it a starter set, as others have mentioned, it is not very heavy or substantial. I have very small hands but someone larger might not like the feel of this flatware. Great Flatware! I purchased this flatware for my college bond daughter. It was significantly less because it was a repackaged set. This flatware is 18/10 stainless steel and has a nice weight. If the package wasn’t damaged, I would say this flatware is wedding gift quality! Husband wanted “medieval weight” and we got it Hubby was tired of cheap daily silverware that was thin, bent, etc. His criteria were that it be fairly plain and classic looking, but “heavy enough that the knights of the round table could have used it.” Also, he wanted spoons that wouldn’t bend when you scooped hard ice cream, a pretty tall order. This stuff is definitely heavy–to us, that’s a plus, but I’m telling you, it’s REALLY heavy. If you’re clearing the dinner table and you have, say, a spoon resting in a bowl, better hold onto it, because it might tip out. But it’s got a beautiful sheen, great classic design, all that. Art Deco & Chrysler Building Combined in Flatware! This is no dainty, frilly set of flatware. The pieces are heavy, beautifully made, and a joy to use. The pattern is certainly aptly named, with the powerful feeling of the Chrysler Building I used to gaze upon as a boy. Nice set, good value We have been using it for a few months now & have had no problems washing it in the dishwasher. The design is very attractive, & the pieces have a solid feel — not super heavy, but not flimsy like some inexpensive flatware. The size of the salad forks seems tinier than usual, but overall a great value for the price. These are not 18/10 Stainless I had received 2 sets of this silverware from Bed Bath and Beyond… Sept. 2006. I ordered this set to replace some missing pieces. NOT a match I read the product description 18/0 and thought it was a typo because further down on the page in the product description it says, " Crafted of durable 18/10 stainless steel and designed to be used on a daily basis" I’d send them back, they are cheap compared to what I had, but my hubby already had thrown them in the dishwasher and we were already using them before I really had a chance to check them out. I could pick them out just by weight alone… I like them a lot! I’m pretty picky about my silverware. To me, a lot of them have an odd metallic taste to them. These do not. The Catch These Kamazaki’s have a very high end feel and are a perfect example of artistic form following enjoyable dining function. The wide tails offer added control and the various sizes of each piece are perfectly scaled and matched. I’m adding the 3-piece server set, appetizer forks, butter knives and dessert spoons. The spoon “bowels” have longer lengths that help prevent spillage compared to rounder spoons. The dinner fork is smaller than my other set and feels more like a precise instrument. The salad fork about the same size as most. The knives cut easily with serrated tips. My 15 y/o service for 8 was a exceptionally good deal, yet, experienced some tough permanent moves during military service. My older set is the new outdoor “Going Anywhere” flatware set and the Gone Fishin’ set is strictly reserved for transfer from the flatware drawer to the dining table. Unique, attractive flatware I purchased this set for myself to replace a 19 year old Oneida set I had gotten tired of. I couldn’t be more pleased. Each piece is shiny, attractively designed, and amusingly shaped. Just as important, each piece is well balanced so that the utensil does not tend to flip off the edge of the plate or cereal bowl as sometimes happens with other handle-heavy utensils. The forks are slightly bowl shaped which facilitates holding food which is not pierced. I have not found the fish lips on the soup spoons to be a problem during eating as long as you are not so rushed that you carelessly shove the spoon against your lower lip, as some reviewers have complained. When handwashing the utensils, some attention was given to check that no food particles are retained in the fish eye holes in the forks and knives; however, this was not an issue if a dishwasher is used. Perfect ! Gorgeous, Elegant, worth the price ! After a long search for a durable, elegant and A+ quality product we bought a Hafnia set and we are more than pleased: very impressed. Sturdy but simply gorgeous, very comfortable to handle. The shine is absolutely stunning even that is brushed stainless. Perfect ! But the description of the aditional pieces as a Serving Set is wrong: they are not a TABLESPOON and a COLD MEAT FORK, the extra pieces are a LARGE SERVE SPOON and LARGE SERVE FORK (same as two of the pieces of the Entertainment Set). Be aware when you get this set it comes with this two wonderful LARGE SERVE SPOON AND FORK, perfect for salads. I was shocked to say the least to open this item up and find 5 pieces, reading it , for some reason I thought oh boy what a great deal 5 place settings for that price, little did I realize it wasn’t a 5 place setting (that I thought odd) to begin with, but it is 5 pieces, and then before realizing it, I ordered another set to accomidate an extra person..I guess I’ll be ordering another 4 more sets to get that 6 place setting for the gift I had planned on.. Sleek, modern and elegant stemware The first thing that impressed me about the Varberg stemware is the weight – it’s solid and heavy in the hand. You’ll also notice that the bowls on the spoons are a squared-off oval shape and the fork tines are longer and sleeker than usual. As a result, these pieces have a nice mouth-feel. These two unique design elements (combined with the high-polish finish) make this stemware look elegant, very classy and very expensive. They are appropriate for everyday use as well as when you want to set an elegant table. Care: these are dishwasher safe but, as with all stainless, do not use a citrus dishwasher detergent or combine with silver or aluminum items. Durable and Luxurious Mmmm, I love digging into my food with this 5-piece place setting. The large knife easily cuts into my food which is easily pierced by my fork and sent on its way to my mouth. Great Great flatware for the price. I was finishing up my silverware set with this purchase. Definitely glad I did. Thx Classic We got this flatware set for our wedding. We had it on a dept store registry but it is made in Korea and Vietnam (Wedgewood version). Amazon had the better version so we returned the dept store sets and got them all from here. The set is large and has a nice weight feel to it, so my husband isn’t worried about bending the pieces. It is very classic and we love it. RUSTED – Do Not Buy This silverware was fine until the knives all developed significant rust spots when they came out of the dishwasher after two months of ordinary use. The return window is ONE month. Do not waste your money on this set of utensils – there’s nothing ‘stainless steel’ about them and Amazon will not help you. I’m not about to let my family ingest rust so these are useless. What a rip-off. Excellent value – quality – sturdy & shiny Like someone else here mentioned, these are similar (practically identical) to the brushed hampton bistro set, except they are polished, look better, better quality, and they’re cheaper!
